Turning up the match-day audio experience

You’ve been waiting all season for this match and counting the minutes until your team walks onto the pitch to join the roar of the crowd. You don’t want to miss a single thing tonight—the goalkeeper’s amazing save, the satisfyingly smooth pass between a midfielder and centre forward, the referee’s poorly judged yellow card (and perhaps even the fans’ boos).

So how do you know if your home audio experience is ready to take you from the opening kick-off to the final whistle? Here are several tips for optimising the sound of sports in your match-day audio experience, as well as some product recommendations to ensure that you’ll spend both halves feeling like you’re right there in the stadium.

Create a 3D soundscape with Dolby Atmos®

Whether you’re a fan who lives nowhere near “your” team, or a local supporter who couldn’t get a ticket for this year’s knockouts, you might be watching the next match from your own sofa. That doesn’t mean your match-day experience can’t be just as exciting—and possibly even more immersive—than what the people currently shivering in their back-of-the-stadium seats are going to get.

With the Bose Smart Soundbar 900, you can bring Dolby Atmos technology into your living room—it fires sound in more directions and employs “object-based audio” that separates out individual sounds from the mix, like the stadium music or the trills of the team anthems, and moves them around the room. This means you can hear the roar of the crowd and the team celebrations in a way that could only get more realistic if you were standing on the sidelines.

The Bose Smart Soundbar 900 has nine speakers tucked into its sleek cabinet, which creates the kind of fully immersive soundscape that used to require installing speakers in the ceiling. And this unrivalled experience isn’t limited to sporting events: Bose’s proprietary technologies are capable of separating every element of whatever you’re watching—the dialogue, the background noise and even the soundtrack—and placing it in different parts of the room. And even when Dolby Atmos isn’t present in the broadcast, Bose PhaseGuide technology can still bring a similar immersive experience.

“… hear the roar of the crowd and the team celebrations …”

Calibrate surround sound with ADAPTiQ

If you’re unsure of where to place your Bose soundbar, don’t worry—Bose has you covered there, too. After unboxing and setting up the soundbar (and any optional surround sound speakers or bass module), you can run the built-in ADAPTiQ audio calibration to ensure that you’re getting the most out of your new speakers.

ADAPTiQ audio calibration takes five separate audio measurements using the built-in microphone on the accompanying ADAPTiQ headset. It then uses that data to customise your soundbar (and optional additional speakers) to help you get the optimal acoustic performance for that particular space. It just takes 10 minutes to set up, and you will not need to perform the ADAPTiQ audio calibration again unless you move the speakers or rearrange the furniture.

Even if you’re watching the match in the living room, that doesn’t mean you have to miss the action when you run to the kitchen to grab another bowl of crisps. Bose SoundLink speakers can be placed throughout the house so that you can keep up with the action on the pitch, even if you weren’t sitting in your favourite chair all the way through the match. And with Bose SimpleSync, pairing two or more Bose speakers is simple and seamless, with no annoying delays between rooms.

Each Bose SoundLink speaker only weighs about half a kilo, so it’s easy to move them from room to room or switch from one connected device to the other. That means that after the final whistle blows, you can quickly play some victory music or whatever tracks make you feel slightly better after a last-minute defeat. There’s even a built-in microphone for phone calls in case your co-worker calls to congratulate you on that big win.

There may be times where even the lowest volume setting on high-quality equipment is still too loud for your housemates. If that’s the case, our wireless Bluetooth headphones and earbuds can keep you immersed in the on-screen action without waking the kids—assuming your late-match comeback celebrations aren’t too loud.

Bose wireless headphones also let you seamlessly jump from two connected Bluetooth devices, so that you can keep an eye and an ear on the match while still responding to texts or Twitter alerts as you receive them. You can also adjust the volume using nothing but the headphones, so if the baby does wake up, you’ll know before he wakes his older sister too.

Hindsight, they say, is 20/20, and once you turn up the sound of sports with quality audio equipment, you may find that hind-sound is the same. You might even consider selling your season tickets.
